Elijah Williams's store account book includes an entry showing that Lucy Terry bought an unsweetened cake of chocolate for six pence on June 7, 1755. We know she made a hot drink with it as this the only way people at the time used chocolate. Like other storekeepers, Elijah kept track of purchases and payments in his account book. Each account included a page listing a person’s purchases with values in pounds, shillings, and pence, and an opposing page listing the ways in which these people paid for their items with labor, goods, or cash.
