Matthew Clesson was born on August 7, 1713, in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Grandson of an Irish immigrant, both Clesson and his father Joseph served in the militia from a young age. Matthew was a 43-year-old Lieutenant when he died in 1756, on a military expedition to Lake George, New York, during the French and Indian War (1757-1763.) The probate inventory of his estate reveals he was a man of means who left both personal possessions and valuable real estate to his widow and young children. The inventory included two mares and a saddle. Clesson's estate was valued at more than £405. Matthew Clesson's probate inventory is transcribed and is in the collection of Historic Deerfield Library.
